What happens if an aural hematoma on a dog is left untreated?
My dog Sadie has an aural hematoma on her right ear. We just got back from the vet and they quoted us $550 to fix it. I have read online that it will resolve itself, I don’t care what her ear looks like, I just don’t want her in pain.
Don’t start telling me I’m a bad pet owner because I just spent $500 for her shots, checkup, frontline and heartgaurd, and meds for her ear infection. I just feel if it’s purely for looks, or if she just has to take some pain meds for a while I would rather save the money for mortgage and gas. I think it’s ridiculous to pay such high fees for my pets when i haven’t been to the doctor in 3 years because of the cost!
If a hematoma on the external ear of a dog or a human being is left untreated can lead to necrosis (damage due to pressure on blood supply) of the cartilage of the ear. It is best to get the haematoma drained.
Of cause the extent of damage is greater with large haematomas. Small hematomas may resolve on their own. It is best to show a veterinary officer.
