For a new CNA is it better to work in nursing home or home health aide?
For a CNA with no experience would it be better to work in nursing homes, or home health aides?
I hear in nursing homes that you can learn more because there are nurses that can help. On the other hand a home health care you’re alone with one patient and have to figure it out on your own.
However the home heath is less demanding because its working with just one resident.
Anyone has experience to compare these places? So would it better to start in a nursing home or home health care for a CNA with no experience?
A lot of CNAs prefer home health because the work is way less rushed and you can spend more time with the client and actually be thorough in your care, and you can work independently without any coworker drama or supervisors looking over your shoulder. All the HHAs I know started in nursing homes and hated it for those reasons. Then there are some people (like me) who really like the nursing home environment for various reasons.
Either way I think it’s probably best to at least start off in a nursing home to kind of “break yourself in.” Working in one forces you to learn how to work fast and be organized and creative with your time. You become very efficient and more at ease with all different kinds of people at varying stages of dementia and physical ailments. You get to see how other CNAs work, how they deal with certain types of patients, and what tricks they use to make things faster, easier, and more comfortable for you and the client. Now, no one says you HAVE to pay your dues in a nursing home if you really don’t want to, but I personally believe it lays a good foundation. Plus, as far as I know, most agencies want you to have experience anyway,
